Thoughts on his logic?

If you profile on top of No Color Adjustment, you are indeed fighting
said nonlinearity, but you have access to the full printer gamut.
If you profile on top of Color Controls, you can get a much more
linear profile, but you lose about a quarter of the available gamut.
I routinely make profiles on top of Color Controls for toned BW and
other small-gamut work, but when you need the full gamut of the
printer you have to profile on top of No Color Adjustment. With
Gretag ProfileMaker 5, I've found that 5,000 or so patches produces a
noticably smoother result than the TC 918, but I don't recommend
trying a 5k-patch target with an Eye-One!
