I'm still walking the fence on RIPs....
At an ASMP meeting tonight, I was told that ImagePrint "uses the Epson driver engine internally and is an RGB RIP that is incapable of independently controlling the ink channels" of an Epson 9600. Fact or fiction? I was also told that there is no linearization or GCR possible with ImagePrint. Seems to be true from what I can find on the web site. There were comments to the effect that the image layout features were very good, but that the image quality was less than that of several Windows-only RIPs (e.g. ErgoSoft's StudioPrint) because ImagePrint is "limited by the internal use of the Epson driver code, which limits the ink and therefore the gamut" of the 9600.
Can anyone advise me as to whether or not there's merit to any of this? I decided to hold off on purchasing a RIP until after the GATF Color Management Conference next week. I feel like I still don't have adequate data.

Richard,
IP is a one of many good RIP solutions for making high quality pretty pictures. And it is one of the only RGB based PostScript solutions in the RIP market. Though it will handle CMYK images in a composite workflow.
As for IP using the Epson driver engine as you have outlined. That is fiction. IP is more of a black box solution that Colorbyte did a good job of engineering. They made IP so you cant get under the hood to fiddle with a linearization curve as you can with Studio print or Colorburst. If someone feels they need to do that type of fiddling then IP might not be for them. The only way to tell the differences is to get demos of the different RIPs, try them out and visually compare the prints from each product.
My GUESS is because IP is more of a black box that some folks start to hypothesize why it works a certain way. Even if it is unfounded. But that might be fiction also.
