impression is that few RIP vendors use the Epson provided code, and most do their
own screening (Cyclone and BestColor I'm sure this is the case for.)

You are right, I didn’t word that very well,
but I said most not all so I wasn’t try to present it as an absolute. I
can only say for sure that some of the RIP’s I’ve run have patterns
that look pretty inferior to what Epson does, that’s not a good selling
point (this coming from an ex-dealer who had to sell the stuff). I won’t
name names because it doesn’t serve a purpose. Certain ones are also notorious
for vertical banding in large areas of solid color. Last I heard both Epson and
HP licensed their patterns from Blue Noise Mask, I don’t know if this has
changed.
