I've done this a few times. Laser printers
can be a challenge as it is sometimes difficult to get all of the color
management shut off in the driver. This varies from manufacturer to manufacturer
but once you figure out their driver it is easy enough to accomplish. Another
drawback to color managing this sort of technology is that the devices
themselves are not very stable. The Canon CLC's and HP Color LaserJet's
that we have are all over the place throughout the course of a day and
are very sensitive to environmental fluctuations.
For color critical use (contract proofing,
etc) I would look to something a little more stable (like your 9600). If
all you are looking for is a more accurate color comp or something like
that then it is probably a worthwhile endeavor to color manage your laser
printer.
Good luck,
