I had been considering an Epson Ultrachrome printer for some time, but someone just pointed to me the HP Designjet 130, which uses archival dye inks. This printer seems to produce very nice prints and is also much more affordable than a 7600. But feedback is hard to find. Do some of you use one and are you happy with it? How does it deal with satin or semi gloss or glossy paper, ink carts efficiency, speed etc.? Thanks in advance!

I've just recently had a chance to play with an HP130. Its OK...the build quality isn't quite as good as the Epson PRO Graphics printers, but the output is quite nice, and the price is attractive. It is faster than the 7600...but the 4000 is probably a better comparison in terms of speed.

Ink carts are smaller, but are cheaper than the Ultrachrome ink.

The other thing to consider is that the print heads are user replaceable on the HP...which is sort of nice.

Additionally, there is an optional HP RIP which allows you to produce SWOP certified proofs. The only other Macintosh based RIP option for that printer that comes to mind is the EFI (BEST) RIP.

Hope this helps.
