Thanks Thomas.
I built a photo queue profile for my Canon S9000 on Epson Enhanced
Matte. This profile was great from the get go. Just a small tweak to
needed to surpass my Epson 2200 with the Epson driver (after the
following is considered). That's when I realized that there's no
Black Point Compensation for photo queues! Then your message came to
me. Yup, that explains a lot! They have BPC in proofing queues, where
I never need it, but not with photo queues! Chalk that one up to
"What are they Thinking?!".
You're also right about the linearization. I'll monkey around with
that in due time.

The shadow problems are due to (lack of) black point compensation in
Proofmaster. I'm guessing you are using Relative colorimetric. The
problem is that you are converting from a colourspace with a black
point of (Lab) L-0 [RGB] to a printer space with a maximum achieval
black of, say, L15 (Could be as low as L6). Using relcol without BPC
will clip any shadow value under L15 to L15. Changing intent to
Perceptual will fix this. In a proofing queue you will usually convert
from CMYK where the black point already is around L15 (give or take).
In regrad to the colour if it is flat it is either you Profile,
linearisation and or media/ink that's the problem. Or it could be you
are sending images without profiles mebedded and have sat of assumed
profiles to a different profile space. for example there is a great
deal of difference of what you can achieve on a HP 5500 and an Epson
9600 (both pigmented) and Hahnemuhle paper. One is vastly superior
while the other can't take enough ink, thus inklimit must be reduced in
linearisation and/or profile app. resulting in good (non wet) blacks
but inferior colour.

Plenty - it usually works a treat given the above limitations.
