I have both my 20" CRT (Mitsubishi 2040u) and 20" Apple Studio LCD about 32" from my eyes.

Much may depend upon available desk space - I'd predict most folks are forced to have monitors closer than they should because they don't have enough space to position the monitor farther away yet keep their keyboard and/or mouse within reach.
