we just rebuilt our prepress dept and viewing room, and gave these recommendations a shot. i've been wanting to see how a more fully neutral environment (walls plus ceiling, dark gray tile floors) would work, but never felt like paying ~$35/qt for the GTI munsell n8 paint. finding these tips in the book were all the incentive i needed to try it.

my experience:

didn't try pittsburgh paint, there are none around here (i believe).

the kelly-moore guys laughed at me. they don't have Violet in the mixing set. out of date info, they suggested. no idea what this means- store fulla dummies, regional/franchise inconsistencies...?

sherwin-williams, no problem. our results with the SW 2129 Zircom are quite nice. a hair warmer than GTI's n8, a bit yellow, and several shades lighter.

i did my server room first, just to see what working in a all gray room would be like, without anyone but me having to suffer with the results. i liked it.

so we did up the other two rooms to match, and we now have two big gray rooms. everyone was stunned to find my hair-brained color scheme to give such a livable result. i like the zircom a lot, good result with no custom mixing or complications.

anyway, just FYI.

Real World Color Management passes on the following paint
recommendations, FWIW.

California photographer Jack Kelly Clark recommends mixing one
gallon of Pittsburgh Paint's pastel-tint white base #80-110 with Lamp
Black (B-12/48 PPG), Raw Umber (L-36/48 PPG), and Permanent Red
(O-3/48 PPG). Write those numbers down and take them with you to
the paint store if you want to try the mix yourself.

A similar Kelly-Moore Paint Co. formula from photographer John
Palmer uses a pastel-tint white as a base with three colors to create
an interior, flat latex similar to Munsell 8 gray: Lamp Black (4/48
PPG), Raw Umber (27/48 PPG), and Violet (2/48 PPG).

Sherwin-Williams paint code: 2129 ZIRCOM. You'll want flat paint
rather than glossy. (Matt Louis, Louis Companies, Arlington, Texas)
