interior design for color viewing

I talked to an interior designer today who said a client had requested she paint a room "18% grey" so they could view photography.

I explained to her that, first of all, 18% grey is really a value of luminance and not necessarily color, and secondly, I don't know that a neutral grey with a luminance of 18% grey is recommended for a color viewing space. However, I don't know what is recommended.

I've read stuff about this but I don't know where. Could anyone recommend a good reference for her? Is there anything online? I've seen some articles online but I don't know if they are giving correct information or not.

Thank you.
John MacDonald
