I have a 20" (Mitsubishi 2060u) that's about 36" away. I set it up that
way originally because I wanted more table space in front of me.
Now that you've got me thinking about it, though, I've become acutely
aware of how often I lean forward while working on an image rather than
zoom in, as if I'm going to see more detail by getting closer to the
monitor! So honestly, my distance from the monitor varies between 2-3 ft.

Recently, I was visiting some friends at a large DC publisher who deals with
reproducing thousands of color images a year. During my visit I got to work
with their monitors and view some images. At first I struggled with their
placement of the their monitors because they were about three feet from my
chair. After I was told to try and get used to the monitor being quite far
from me I started to adjust and enjoyed the view.
I am curious about others experience with how far away one should or should
not place a monitor from the end-user when working on images say in
Photoshop.
