But what you've just described is the reason why such copy should be delivered in a device independent
color format, so that it can be converted to device dependent CMYK, at the point where it is known
what device it is going to be printed on!

I'm sure squashing everything down to standard SWOP works, and has worked for a long time,
but it's time to move on, and overcome the limitations this imposes. The upsurge in wanting/expecting
to profile actual presses is a sign that there is no longer complete satisfaction with trying to
standardize on something like SWOP. The ECI is an example of a large industry group that
are firmly moving in this direction. (ie. compare PDF/X-1 with PDF/X-3).
