It has to do with the brightness of the light. In a very dark room, D50-calibrated displays look a bit yellow but you can adapt pretty quickly. The only people I've found who like D50 calibration are those who work in reduced light environments. In brighter surroundings D50 tends to look much more yellow and much less desirable. Daylight at D50 (or so) is much much brighter - even on cloudy days.
