Tony,
I guess your problem stems from talking to theoretical professors instead of
practical engineers. :)
It is actually technically very easy to get an extremely accurate voltage supply
for the lamps. Use an industrial switching (or linear) voltage regulated power
supply. By utilizing two extra sensing wires, the voltage drop of the lamp
wires can be cancelled and if you really want to go to extremes, even the socket
errors can be removed.
Further, the voltage will be easily adjustable to set the desired operating
voltage and color temperature.
