Good answer Ray

This issue of backing material material dates back to the days of reading photographs with a densitometer for calculating halftone exposures on a process camera. I used to demonstrate this in two ways. I would hold up a print with the instrument pressed against it and turn it around to be looking at the bottom, press the button and show how much light it passing through the print. I would then take readings of the same area with different backing material, white - black - grey etc. Of course the reading achieved would be different with each backing. Back in those days some film manufacturers would package their films with a heavy protective sheet that was neutral gray. I used to collect those to use for taking readings on. I still like to use camera gray cards to read reflective test prints.
