Greetings color experts,
I am a photographer seeking advice regarding the conversion of black
and white photographs to cmyk for offset printing.
I successfully work with color images for offset printing but now I
have a number of black and white photographs that are to be printed
in CMYK and I am finding that my usual routine may not work.
The black and white photos have been digitally photographed and
brought into Adobe RGB. They have been adjusted and desaturated and
are ready for CMYK. I have a medium GCR and Heavy GCR cmyk profile
(that I had made for the press) but neither of these give a
conversion that the printer is happy with. They want to see K
starting in the highlights and carry most of the information on
through to the shadows with CMY added to richen the grays and black.
When I convert I don't get a black dot until around 5% and even in
the 3/4 tones and shadows the K is still not the strongest channel.
The printer feels that K needs to be stronger to avoid color shifting
or crossover.
None of the books I have seem to offer advice on this. Can anyone
help? Is there a solution besides channel mixing. Is the printer's
request reasonable?
Thank you kindly,
Joseph
