Yes, I think so. Larger gamut space are always sought epecially in the
context of PMS colors.

You'd start off from either a large RGB space or Lab. It does not matter
where you start IMO because your first point of conversion is from whathever
you are to Lab (or XYZ) and then to whathever output space you want. In
general, you'd sy start from something larger or as large as your output
space but not smaller.
