David:
One warning about ProPhotoRGB, and this comes from my own ignorance, rather
than from a viable workflow. ProPhotoRGB has areas outside of Lab space,
where a max value (such as 255 in 8-bit) would put you outside of Lab. I
was running tests on my workflow with targets, ProPhotoRGB to CMYK printer
profile, and the CMM was giving me some strange behaviors trying to work
outside of Lab space. I know this site seems to get mentioned in almost
every synopsis of the list, but if you haven't, you should check out Bruce
Lindbloom's excellent info on working spaces (www.brucelindbloom.com).
Also, I realize that it probably doesn't matter any more with a full 16-bit
workflow becoming a reality, but editing resolution is lost when the
working space is significantly larger than the maximum gamut of the
image. Steve Upton's ColorThink (www.chromix.com) is fantastic for seeing
just how your image fits (or doesn't fit) into the gamut of various color
spaces.
