The digital halftone systems I know of are:
Kodak Approval, Fuji FinalProof, Creo Spectrum/Proofsetter, Polaroid
PolaProof and Presstek HDP (Digital MatchPrint). There may and probably
are others. The PolaProof goes by a different name now I think.
IN GENERAL these systems have simple density control and dot gain
control through curves. Density is usally controlled by laser
power/exposure adjustments and dot gain curves come from the front-end
system driving the device. They generally AREN'T color-managed by ICC
profiles. These systems tend to be pretty stable but tend to not be
very flexible either. Tough to match to a press unless the dye/pigment
set are already pretty close. Hue and chroma are basically fixed.
On the other hand, these systems generally offer very high resolution
(2400/2540dpi) that matches up with the CTP system they are intended to
pair up with. In some cases (Creo Spectrum), the proofer IS the
platesetter. They render type and vector art extremely well, better
than the typical inkjet.
The best way to think of these systems is they are the digital
equivalent of an analog proof system.

What are the various "Digital Proof" systems in use and what are the

What are valid claims that can be made for one over the other?
Digital HALFTONE DOT proofing systems like Kodak Approval or Fuji
FinalProof are are you including any non-analog proofing system?

Terry,
Kodak and Fuji I have seen, but I'd like to know of any other system
which could be factually called "digital". Someone made a claim that
they have access to a "digital" proofing system and I doubt it is
either of the Kodak or Fuji.
