John,
Unlike you, I've had the dubious pleasure of editing Chris when he's
writing about things that really piss him off, like color management
in QuarkXPress, for example. Please read the rest of his post,
because it raises issues I and, apparently, just about every other
member on this list who isn't employed by Apple would very much like
to see clarified.
Anyone hoping that Real World Color Management explains the ColorSync
utility in Jaguar will be disappointed-we published long before
Jaguar shipped, and we don't have that good a crystal ball.
We WILL need to explain ColorSync in Jaguar in the update we're
planning for later this year. Right now, that's a very scary prospect
indeed, because from where I'm sitting, it doesn't seem to be
particularly explicable (the crashing bug in CS Utility certainly
doesn't help).
I'm certainly prepared to believe that ColorSync in Jaguar is not in
fact three steps backward and five steps sideways, but as a
reasonably experienced user of color management, my current
experience indicates otherwise.
I agree that the way Chris expresses his ideas is occasionally
abrasive, but please don't shoot the messenger. I can guarantee you
that Chris has merely put into rather pointed language something that
many, many others feel.
If we occasionally resort to theatrics, attribute it to the pain we
feel when a key technology undergoes sweeping, and thus far entirely
undocumented changes that don't appear to fix anything that was
broken while appearing to break a good many things that formerly were
not. Look at it as a cry for help.
I hope I've been sufficiently diplomatic...

I resemble that remark <g>.
Hope I'm not rubbing off on Chris.
Chris, John, we call this "tough love".
