If you can, set the scanner to transmissive mode and scan something black that
is thick enough to be guaranteed to be opaque. Make sure that it is bigger than
the platen to avoid light leaking past it and then reflected around inside the
scanner.


Since the CCD is the same for both modes you never need to worry about
reflective mode.

Anything reflective will never be perfect except some complex optical "black
holes".
