Here is a quick rundown on a color server search.
Thought this info would be useful to others.
Thanks to all for suggestions received.
Will update as evaluations proceed.
CAPABILITY SOUGHT:
As input takes multi-page pdfs
(books, many pages per pdf, many books per day).
Most pages are created by opening bitonal tiffs
directly into Acrobat, but there are also pages created
via Distiller with grayscale (or in some cases RGB) tiffs
with embedded profiles,
and pages created by unknown means,
with or without profiles embedded.
Pdf's to be dropped on a hot folder or sent to desktop printer
or similar automated technique.
(Do NOT want to manually open each pdf in Acrobat
in order to commence processing).
Must be able to match from the embedded profile(s) in the pdf
to a specified output device profile,
with specified rendering intent(s).
Should allow specifying the source profile(s) to assume
if there are no profiles embedded in the pdf.
Prefer matched pdf as output,
(with the output device profile embedded
for occasional final visual checks)
but we may be able live with
(or need for some RIP conditions) PostScript output.
Matched file will go to a RIP
that has NO matching or profile recognition capacity.
Prefer OS X, could live with Windows XP if I have to.
CANDIDATES SUGGESTED:
Alwan CMYK Optimizer Server
- Eliminated: can only handle CMYK & RGB,
no grayscale, per Elie Khoury, Managing Director
GretagMacbeth iQueue 140
- runs under Classic on OS X
- there is some confusion on whether GretagMacbeth
intends to develop this product further.
(I have heard there are frequent inquiries
from those who have moved to OS X on Xserves.)
- preliminary testing shows that iQueue quits without warning
on pages that were bitonal tiffs created by opening into Acrobat.
Heidelberg Prinect Color Editor (also called SuperColor)
with Callas AutoPilot
- testing in progress
Praxisoft ICC Autoflow
- to be tested
Further suggestions welcomed.
