Epson 2200 Help!

  • Subject: Epson 2200 Help!

I'm rapidly losing hair on this one...

I had a perfect setup on Windows XP with my 2200; my monitor was profiled
with a Spyder & PhotoCAL, I was successfully softproofing in Photoshop to
Epson-supplied profiles (the latest ones on their website) and my prints
(all on Enhanced Matte) were so close to my screen that it took at least 5
minutes to find a difference. In a word, as close to perfect as I can
conceive.

That was then, this is now: I sold the PC and bought a G5 (running Panther
with all updates installed) and an 23" Cinema Display (not the new aluminum
one). Profiled the display with the Spyder & PhotoCAL, hooked up the 2200,
removed the GIMP-Print drivers, downloaded the Epson profiles and latest
drivers and disabled Colorsync in the driver. Softproofing is A-OK... *BUT*
the prints are significantly off. There appears to be way too much yellow
being laid down - for instance, peaches are turning orange.

I've F'd around for over a week now playing with Color Density settings and
whatever else I could find in the driver and tried adjustment layers in
Photoshop but it's getting stupid. I finally downloaded a demo of
ImagePrint, having read good things here and elsewhere, and the prints were
perfect again.

So here's the question: am I domed to spend another $700 Canadian (which I
don't have after buying the G5) on ImagePrint in order to successfully
print, or is there something I'm missing that I can try with the equipment I
already have (please say there is!!!!). I'm rather surprised that just
switching platforms would cause such a shift in printed output; it makes me
think Colorsync - or something else - is playing a factor. Then again, maybe
Epson wrote the Mac drivers differently...?

Many thanks in advance,

Matt
