Proofer or Press?
Proofer or Press?

This is a good point. On a smaller scale, my local printer may not know
which of his 3 presses my job will run on, so shouldn't the goal for the
designer be to use the proofer profile to soft proof & convert when creating
the files, then send those files, either tagged or untagged depending on
communication with the printer? This way the designer knows (more or less)
what his job will look like. The printer shouldn't use a proofer that their
press can't match, so they (the experts) can worry about the press end of it
and the designer can worry about the proofer end.
Maybe this is too simplistic, but it sure makes sense to me. As always, I'm
open to being corrected!
Thanks,
Matt

Graeme - I think you missed the point.
It is quite difficult to ask Time magazine and RR Donnelly to make a test
run of my ICC targets on one of their 384 presses, especially since they do
not know which press the ad will be run on.
I have to proof to some standard, and Time specifies SWOP.
