OOPS! I meant to say that the CONTRAST setting is what
determines the white value.
There is a contrast adjustment available in the Universal Access
preferences, but it didn't look like anything related to color
management. The whites did get whiter, but the blacks also looked
blacker as I increased contrast. I think it's just to increase
readability of text for people with special sight issues.
I left it set at normal, which left me only with a brightness
adjustment on the keyboard, which I had set to max brightness.
