Optical & PrintFix Issues

I am trying to calibrate and profile my Powerbook 17" LCD display with
Optical 3.7.5-2 and get PrintFix up and running, and ran into these
issues/questions. Mac OS 10.3.4.
Optical & PowerBook LCD (1.8/6500)
Optical requests that I adjust the brightness to match the black and
white targets, but with the keyboard brightness control cranked all the
way up, the LCD falls way short of matching the black level and white
level. And, there's no other adjustment available since, well... it's a
laptop. Is this pretty typical of laptops, or do I have a problem?
In the black & white tests, the software seems to be grinding away at
something, then a below-target level will appear on the thermometer
bar, then the readout disappears and this cycle seems to repeat until I
click through to the next step. Is this normal. Is optical trying to
set a higher black or white level. Should I just click continue as I
have been, even though the Mac wristwatch is showing?
After creating a profile, my desktop picture, which is a gray to black
gradient created in Photoshop, displays bands where the _color_ of the
gray varies slightly from the rest of the desktop. Is that normal
considering it's a laptop LCD, not a higher quality freestanding LCD
display? Or does it indicate I did something wrong?
PrintFix
At first launch, it asked for the serial #, which I entered. Upon
clicking OK, Photoshop CS immediately crashed. Photoshop continues to
crash with every attempt to launch PrintFix from
File>Automate>PrintFix. I tried uninstalling PrintFix and reinstalling.
Also trashed Potoshop preferences file and Plugin cache file. Any
thoughts on what to do? The plugin does not make it's version number
known, but it's whatever was shipping last week.
Thanks...
Doug
