Measurement consistency when calibrating monitors

I recently had some problems when training a customer to use i1 Display.
They were using a fairly new LaCie CRT and I have used these many times
before with other profiling solutions and felt that I would no have problem
getting a good calibration and profile with i1 display.
However, when we came to setting the brightness it took a bit longer than
normal and i1 match kept to set 48%, then 50%, then 48%, then 50%, then 52%,
then 50% etc etc. Then when we came to set the white point the measurements
were varying hugely. We would leave the device on screen measuring away,
touch no controls for several minutes, and yet the RGB triangles would jump
about up to a centimetre either side of the target points. It became
impossible to set the correct white point, we were trying to aim for a
moving target.
We went ahead and built the profile. Then I tried displaying a black to
white blend using the Monitor RGB proof set-up and there were marked steps
in the greyscale, and displaying a file with concentric black circles from
10,10,10 RGB to 0,0,0 RGB displayed large colour casts in some values. Even
without the proof set up, i.e. using the profile as well as the calibration,
the results were not good.
The room was very dark. No external light, just the monitor. So I all I
could think of was that the display was not consistent. I tried different
resolutions and refresh rates, and another i1 display without any more
success.
When back in the office I tried the same on my Sony CRT screen. First I used
i1 Match with a new i1 Display and it produced the same fluctuations when
measuring the white point. I tried i1 Match with an i1 and although the
variations were less they were still there. I then tried the i1 with Monaco
Optix XR Pro and the fluctuations were smaller but still there. I then tried
the Optix colorimeter and last got some stable measurements.
Has anyone else seen these issues or has any comments?
Regards
Rob Griffith
