RIPs with hot folders are those such as Colorburst, Cheetah, Brisque, etc.
They allow you to set up hot folders with 'in' and 'out' queues, other wise
known as watched folders, that have certain characteristics attached to each
folder, such as DPI, the device the the out, ICC profiles, etc. This is
similar to the "Watched folders" concept in Acrobat.
I try to use my RIPs in this fashion to avoid the multiple conversion of
PDF's to ps and vice versa.

Here's my dumb question... How do I know if I am using a RIP with hot
folders? Or have I already answered the question by having to ask it? ;-)
We have a Xerox Phaser 790 as our color output device. The RIP is built-in
(I assume). Does this setup allow the use of hot folders?
Thanks!

Here is a suggestion: if
you are using a RIP with hot folders, instead of printing from Acrobat, do
this instead: save the PDF file from whatever application you are using
(Photoshop, Indesign, Quark, etc) directly into the hot folder and let it
RIP from there.
