What would be *needed* in order for PDF/X3 fully
address color color management? What is the missing link?

In descending order :

(1) Multiple language threading on self-support lists to spread information on the benefits of fully invertible color management and text management. There is an excellent and energetic multiple-language PDF/X-3 list populated by people in Northern Europe who all read and write (or at least read -:)) German and step in with help for English posts. Apple has been asked to multi-thread the ColorSync Users List in the past, though it is not an Apple issue but an issue of the List itself.

(2) Publishing free and human readable standards in as many languages as possible. As a friend said in 2001, the most stupid thing one can do is to ask the user community to adopt a certain way of working and then not make that way of working available to the user community.

(3) Publishing guidelines to stop the printing and proofing industry from implementing software interface terminology on the principle that in the ICC Specification only forward / output rendering into the printing space is desirable whereas backward / input rendering for reseparation and proofing is best covered up, wiped up and forgotten. I know the last time a tangent of this came up on the List, Apple's blood pressure shot through the roof, but it really does need to be discussed and addressed publically.

(4) Getting rid of QuarkXPress -:).

Thanks,
Henrik

(PS Try the library of the nearest national or regional college of printing and you will find standards unavailable, I bet.)
