I am on a G4 with a self-calibrating Apple display.

This one is raising a red flag for me. How old is this monitor and how much has it been used? I got one of the last of these monitors, maybe 6 months before Apple discontinued them. I just went and checked and the manufacturer date stamp on it is February 1998. That's a 6 year old monitor. So I'd venture that your monitor is probably at least 5 years old, unless it just hasn't been used all that much.

Also, these monitors needed an ADB connection to do calibration, and the software only existed on OS 9 and earlier. The G4 is USB. How are you calibrating this monitor?

Anyway, it's very possible that images look less saturated, less bright and with less contrast than they ought to. What you might need is a new monitor.
