ICC based systems make convenient assumptions like D50, that simplify the
process, while at the same time limiting it (a certain degree of the
simplification is simply the limiting). Spectral systems can calculate metamerism and
other items beyond the capabilities of ICC based systems that only use color
values like Lab. But the complexity tends to outstrip the value for most print
based work, and the non-standardized nature of such spectral solutions make them
difficult to use in many workflows.
