2 issues being discussed and the relationship of spectral data
influencing the calibration/profile creation.

Response: Gets to the gray balance faster, but limited by the D50 ICC
output profile convention (when using Signalize!).
If profiles and CMMs eventually evolve to spectral connection, then
LUTs would not be required to the extent that Lab connection
space-based systems require them today. Therefore higher accuracy in
connection and reproduction.
New topic: White Point in creating Camera Profiles
Response: The base issue with the camera profiling failures in the
past. Scanners have been relatively easy to profile as they are a
constant condition (including white point). Now cameras can be
profiled for a given condition because of the integration of actual
scene lighting conditions and target data reference file when
creating camera profiles. basICColor has done this for the past 18
months. The automation of this step with the forthcoming PM5 and the
newer EyeOne spectros offering the diffusion accessory now make this
part more intuitive.
Separate issue: Workflow with the new generation camera profiles. At
this point Phase One Capture One becomes an important part of
processing the camera files. Photoshop CS is fairly closed in terms
of both camera and working space profile support. If enough folks
lobby for the support of custom Strobe and Tungsten/Halogen profiles,
we might see a new and better quality of imaging come out of today's
camera technology.
I believe that many packages take the position that triangulating
between 2 input profiles or color tables will allow the end user to
post-process RAW files to a better white point standard. That
certainly is a step in the right direction. How about if we apply a
bit of science and improve upon that with custom profiles? Contact
your local camera or software manufacturer to lobby for better
support of this new profiling technology.

On the other hand, since, as you state, spectral solutions are better at
accounting for metamerism, I wonder how that valuable feature could be
incorporated into ICC-based color management systems, since both pigment-
and dye-based inks are still somewhat metameric, even after some recent
remarkable improvements. Is that feasible?
Well yes and the solutions exist today. I can measure spectral data using my
EyeOne for both ambient light and now Flash and build those readings into a
Profile using ProfileMaker Pro. The idea being, go to the site you'll be
viewing the prints under, build the profile for that and print.
