What if the dammage is already done? Say I'm already infected with
the gimp 'bug' (no insult intended to the gimp people). Then what?
How would I first confirm that gimp is indeed installed on my
machine? And can I unload it?
I'd really like to understand what this is all about. Gimp-Print
shouldn't be overwriting anything else; it simply installs a
collection of PPD files and a Gimp-Print specific CUPS driver. If
there is a filename collision somewhere, we need to rename whatever it
is that is causing the collisions.
The other possibility I can think of is that something in OS X is
indexing the PPD files, and somehow only allowing one PPD file per
printer.
Tyler, can you look into this? If there's really something going on
here that's under our control, it's urgent that we fix it, and if not,
we need to understand how to work around it.
To detect whether Gimp-Print is installed, look for the file named
/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertoprinter. That's the conversion filter
for CUPS.
BTW, in 5.0 we're trying harder to avoid name collisions, in
particular between multiple versions of Gimp-Print. For example, the
filter is renamed rastertogimpprint-5.0. The PPD files are also being
named differently and in a way that makes it very unlikely anything
else would collide.
