Hello!
I've been using a color managed workflow for a few years, but have started
noticing a problem when I view images with various applications. I'm using
OS X 10.2.8, and my Sharp LCD display (LL-T19D1) is profiled using the
Colorvision Spyder and OptiCal. I recently upgraded Photoshop to CS.
I start with a photograph taken with a Canon 1Ds in RAW mode. I use Adobe
Camera Raw to convert my image to Adobe 1998 - which is also set as my
working space.
I edit the image and save as a .PSD file. Then I prepare to save the image
for the web. I convert to sRGB, and use "save for web". I include a profile
in the saved .jpg file. You can see the image in question here:

When I open both the .PSD file and the "saved for web" .jpg file in
Photoshop, they look basically the same (as I would expect), even though the
.PSD file is tagged with Adobe 1998, and the .jpg file is tagged with sRGB.
But when I open the .jpg file in other applications on the Mac, things start
getting strange.
In "Preview" (the Mac's generic viewer application), the colors are
considerably more saturated than the same image viewed with Photoshop, but
otherwise appear "right".
When I attach the .jpg image to an HTML-formatted e-mail in Entourage, the
colors shift a fair amount. In the example I'm looking at, what should be
yellow-gold instead looks more reddish-brown. The area I'm talking about is
the streaked colored wall to the far left. I've used the Mac "Digital Color
Meter" utility to measure the color values that appear on my monitor. When I
measure the image as displayed by Photoshop, this color patch has a value of
210, 175,0, while in Entourage it has a value of 215, 159, 93. The spot, as
displayed in Preview, measures 218, 166, 0, which is similar to Photoshop.
(I'm not sure it matters, but the same patch, measured with Photoshop's
eyedropper, is 216,159, 94.)
Also, when I upload the image to PBase, and view with Safari browser, the
colors look *just like* they do in Entourage - which is to say, different
than Photoshop or Preview. I'm pretty sure that Safari is not color-managed
application, but I'm not sure about Entourage.
I have discovered the problem is not tied to my display profile. Even when I
select the generic sRGB profile, the
So, can anyone suggest what's going on here?
Also, is there a list somewhere of Macintosh applications that are
profile-aware?
Thanks in advance!
