Hi John -
There are multiple factors, but the easy one is that the reflective and
refractive indices have changed.
The light hitting the material is no longer reflected in the same
relationship as previously viewed.
The air/fabric interface has changed as well, due to the layer of moisture
on the material surface. That is why some synthetics which sheet the water
away appear less changed than cotton/wool materials.
