OK. I finally found the Color Management Off settings at my end.
I never thought I'd ever find a need for such a setting so I confess I never
thought it could have ben there.
Well, if you examine what 'color management off' has you'll see that all it
does is not really turn color management off, but use the monitor profile as
the RGB working space. Underneath it all, Photoshop still uses profiles to
manage the display of CMYK and Lab data. But when it comes to displaying
untagged RGB data, as in your case, there is something akin of a null
transform going on, IMO. The RGB data is first converted to Lab through the
RGB working space and then given to the monitor profile which converts from
Lab to RGB before giving it to the video card.

It lightens up because you're telling Photoshop to apply a different
interpretation to the RGB data.
