When you upgrade you send your own dongle back to GretagMacbeth (don't know
whether it's before or after receiving the new one) and won't have access to
it ever again.
The only way around that is to purchase a new full version rather than
upgrading.

I agree this is less fortunate in certain cases. Be aware however that you
can purchase singular modules to extend the functionality of profilemaker 5
to "regain" the old functionality.
