Just joined the list a few minutes ago, pardon my jumping in in the middle.
What is reasonable to expect of a printer who claimes to use color
management? Consistency and support. I print four magazines with the worlds
largest printer in three different locations. I have one workflow with that
printer. I expect that no matter where I print, the color is to be the same.
They provided me with their profile and I plugged it into my workflow. With
some tweaking of their profile, I have consistent color. We opted not to
mess with my device profile since I have 6 other color workflows
established. So my profile must remain generic. But they have supported me
throughout the process. Even the sheetfed printers I work with support me.
Maybe it's because I'm dealing a lot with high end printers (for a low end
product ;) , but that is what I expect from my vendors. I have a lot of
people who want to print my work. But if they aren't color managed, are
color managed but don't have consistent color, or don't support me then they
don't get my business. And that's part of my vendor selection process, color
evaluations. I look at proofs vs. printed pieces, I have them run my test
patterns on their standard proofing device. If they can do that, then we go
to the next part, making my proofs contract proofs. If they can do that,
then we start talking about jobs. We do everything in house except for
trapping and imposition. We run a Creo Veris driven by a Creo Brisque and
love it. Our printers and art directors love it too. But that's us, and how
WE (I) deal with vendors and color workflows.

Reasonable? "Here's are profile, have it at". That's a reasonable reply.

there are a rare few printers that would say this and supply a profile.

Unfortunately as you've seen, the BS factor from many others is quite
high!
