Indeed, Andrew, very few printers willingly give away their profiles.
It's rather the exception than the norm, if you ask me. They think
they're giving away commercial secrets when they pass along their
profile. The truth is, I think, is when they do give their profile away
they all of a sudden become vulnerable and open themselves to criticism
and reveal their technical ignorance about color, which they don't
exactly like to do. Let's face it, not too many printers are ICC saavy
in north america even in 2004. Europe? I could not say. Japan?
Probably. China? We'd be surprised.

Reasonable? "Here's are profile, have it at". That's a reasonable
reply. And
there are a rare few printers that would say this and supply a profile.
Unfortunately as you've seen, the BS factor from many others is quite
high!
