You just answered your own question. There's less chance that the job
gets screwed up. My goal it to have the job printed with as little
likelyhood of problems as possible. If in this specific situation,
leaving the profile out helps to insure that then so be it. What's the
harm? The file has already been prepped for the final destination.
There's no benefit in having the profile in the file except to provide
an easy means for someone to make a conversion when none is desired.
that file winds up being printed on newsprint,
all would be fine without a profile. But if the file goes elsewhere,
hopefully someone will notice how bad it is and the guessing begins.
The file's not going anywhere else. We're talking about files prepped
for the final destination. If its known that they'll be used elsewhere
or other conversions are needed then supplying something other than
CMYK is probably in order.
Even assuming the above... a printer that I've prepped a file for wants
to send it to some different device... he only needs to assume the
proper profile for his press/proofer because that's what I prepped the
file for. No guessing needed.
I used to be just as much of an evangelist as you for embedding
profiles in everything... until CMYK files got hosed a couple of times
by unintended conversions that wouldn't have happened if there had been
no profile in place. The conversions from a valid profile to a valid
profile still hosed custom channel edits. Yes, it was a bonehead
mistake on the pre-press/printer's part but that doesn't change the
fact that the whole scenario could have been easily avoided by simply
leaving the profile out. Who's at fault doesn't matter. I just want
the job to look as expected. Including a profile... in this specific
scenario... provides no benefit.
