Next time you are in the press room with multiple presses
or are able to evaluate a press run under different operators -
look at something as simple as how much water the plate is carrying
during the run.
One operator will be running the plate bone dry with maybe a bit of a
shimmer outside the sheet area
(resulting in good dense smooth color)
the next operator will be flooding to much water on the plate
creating a wet shimmer look over the entire plate area.
The second operator may - seemingly -
have to worry less about plugging up the shadow areas or toning
but his ink will be emulsifying -
creating
an orange peel look to solids
solids with pinholes
overall toning and scum.-
and definately banding
A variety of factors effecting color density and ink trap -
all during the same press run.
