Abe,
One the best printers in the market today is the HP 9500 in price and performance. The print quality is good, It has a Intermediatry transfer belt like the CLC's and DC 12. Can handle most media, upto 300 GSM. 200 LPI.
I have seem better consitancy from the HP 9500 than the CLC's and DC 12's which are $25,000 and above. The HP 9500 is around $6500.00. The HP 9500 is built on the CLC 3200 Platform.
The Disadvantages:
Clone PostScript, Slow 24 PPM, No Color controls, No Color Utilities, No Profiling software, Cannot embed an external RIP, (There was some talk at Drupa that HP will offer Best color, Not sure if the bundle is ready to market as yet)
If some one could offer an Cluster printing solution( Multiple Engines) and drive from an external RIP, I think HP 9500 machine is a good solution for Short run Printing.
Rahul
