For images without profiles it's not doing any matching.  Or rather,
it's inferring the "system profile", aka the default display profile,
and thus not doing any matching.

The ColorSync "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy... the alternative of assuming the sexual orientation of all files is sRGB is rather... distasteful... to those of the Mac persuasion. I think we may need to just get over it and accept the value of a universal untagged standard, with proper treatment for tagged files. I can't wait to see the fireworks when the other side changes their minds on this standard, when Windows moves to something "beyond sRGB"... it wouldn't be the first time Apple had finally adopted an industry standard only to have Microsoft almost immediately announce a shift to something else.
