Well, I did mention that I'd done this in my original post.
However, I've done some further experimentation - which included running the
same script on a G5 and got *no* errors.
Rechecked the laptop settings, ran the script and got the same errors.
Set the G5 to dither and got results that matched my laptop.
Trashing the PS prefs and rebooting has now cured the problem - so the
answer is that this is the result of Photoshop's dithering and I need to
check my results on a Mac that hasn't been *hacked to pieces* before
concluding that PS has a bug :-(
Still, it's nice to know how the dithering algorithm works...
