There were 10 bit DACs even before that. Radius had a 10 bit card some 10+
years ago. That was back in the days when you could get away with charging
$4k for a video card and the designers actually cared about the quality of
the analog electrical signal from the video card rather than just how many
millions of pixels it could draw per second.
