As an estimate you can look at the NTSC color gamut of the display.
The tristimulus values from the EDID (which are normally close to the
real values) will give you an NTSC gamut close to 72%:
BenQ FP231W DDC-EDID values: .64 .332 .288 .601 .146 .064
Ratio: Device_xy-area / NTSC_area = 0.7181479140328698
So the color gamut is in the "same league" like the Eizo CG21, Quato
Intelli Proof 21 or the NEC 2180UX. A more detailed comparison would
have to be done for all displays measured with the same sensor or for
similar hardware settings (whitepoint, luminance). Don't try to make
"fine judements" about the color gamut comparing ICC-profiles made
under different conditions.
To answer your unasked question: Yes, the color gamut is "good enough"
for color critical work and is slightly bigger compared to a CRT. I
personally like the 21" displays better because the BenQ FP231W 23"
panel is not as even illuminated and I prefer the dot pitch of a
1600x1200 21" display. Last not least the panel looks somewhat
"strange" IMO. It's hard to put this into words, but "grayish" or
"washed out" goes into the direction. The panel has a "special" pixel
structure/appearance. Try to take a look onto the display before you
buy it. I know people who use it with success and like it, while I
personally prefer a high-end 21" display.
Best regards
Peter
