I personally prefer the 16 bit route for the before mentioned reason of capturing the most information available from a transparency.
Especially when capturing via a drum scanner.
What I always find interesting is that quite often many observations relating to high/16-bit image quality are done on-screen.
I'd venture to argue that 90% of the images scanned/imported (from a digital source) are going to print.
So why judge an images quality only from info gained on screen or from applications such as Photoshop when that is not your intended output?
This is moot if you are only scanning for screen/web.
