Wanted to add my two cents on this older post...
Instead of trying to understand and unravel the
complexities of your workflow when you do not have a
lot of experience with accomplishing this task, I
would recommend hiring a color management consultant
to optimize your workflow from beginning to end.
Advantages Include:
1) Having your system correctly optimized for accuracy
of color reproduction.
2) Saving a lot of time and headaches that would
involve using inexperienced in-house personnel to try
and figure out how to set up and use color management.
3) Having the advice of a pro who would have the
answers to your questions and would offer options that
would not be imagined by you.
4) If done correctly, your system can be easily
expanded (new software and hardware) and still remain
fully color managed. You will only need a consultant
for remote advice after the system is properly set up
and operators have been trained in the new workflow
procedures.
Unfortunately, most accountants do not see consulting
fees as economically advantageous. Crisis management
is the norm and many vendors will not be willing to
figure out your whole workflow for you.
Press and prepress companies generally will not (or
cannot) optimize your workflow for you either. Most
salesmen have no idea that helping a client in this
area could be an advantage for them. ("Let our experts
make your color for you."...aka
$$$$$Matchprints$$$$Retouching$$$)
Bottom line on color management for an agency your
size...it pays for itself in time and material
savings. Convincing the powers that be to spend money
to save money can be very tough. Case in point...The
Gap spends about 6 million a year in prepress and
could do it for half that if they used an efficient,
fully color managed workflow. I could retire in style
on their Matchprint/retouching charges for just a few
months. To my knowledge they do not use color
management consultants and their prepress vendors do
not want to cut off the gravy train.
