Use of gray cards for setting exposure is really no longer necessary or easy to do, as you have discovered. The camera histogram is a much better tool for exposure.

Gray cards are still useful for setting the neutral balance (sometimes wrongly called "white balance") of your camera. For that purpose, make certain your gray card has a very flat spectral response (some of the old gray cards do not and can cause problems with digital cameras).
