Just my two cents.
We have an Epson 9000 that I use to print photo quality postesr for my
customers. We print posters at 720 dpi without any banding and get stunning
result for a 9000. Many think that they are done on a 9600. We reserve 1440
dpi printing for the case that someone want to make a big mosaic or montage
made of large quantity of very small (4X6") pictures. I can use
bi-directionnal printing all the time if I want except for these mosaic. I
print 24X30" poster in 12-14 minutes.
I could print at 360 dpi and still beat about many print shop around here.
Again, no banding on Epson matte or Ilford satin paper.
The success is adjustment. If the printer's head are in good shape and
clean, you must check the paper feed length adjustment if you have banding.
This is the most capricious adjustment on all Epson printer. Epson printer's
paper feed mechanism design is weak. Also this adjustment will vary with the
weight and the type of paper used. On my 9000, I can't program more than one
paper feed length adjustment but I think you can program 4 on the 9600. One
for each media you use.
The Bi-D is also a difficult adjustment to do. You can't get it perfect. (my
9000 is too old for that). But it's usable bigger than 11X14" print (where
peoples will not look at the picture with the nose on it). Note also that if
you want to use Bi-D you must have a perfect thickness adj too and you must
not forget to switch the media thickness type on the printer to match the
paper you use in it. If the Bi-D adj is good, if the thickness adj is good
too, and if the paper length adj is perfect, your 9600 at 360 dpi should
print about as good as my 9000 in 720.
All adjustment require that you run the printer in maintenance mode to make
them.
I know that many will say to you that I'm wrong and it's not possible but
it's true and believe me, I'm very perfectionist. It' just a sideline
business for me and I don't have the money to put on a 9600 now. It's why I
use the 9000 but I would prefer a better printer.
I take care of the printer myself. I don't think that Epson technician have
the time on a service call to make perfect adj like the one I do myself. It
took me many hours, if not complete day to adjust the printer but it works
about like a new one now.
Have a nice day!
