Thank you, Bruce, for your explanation. Honestly, though, I have no idea
what an "explicit midpoint" is...
As for the 16 bits Photoshop uses, they are still not FULL 16 bits, are
they? If I understand you correctly, the 16th bit is there only to
accommodate the extra 1 level (level no. 32768) that does not fit within the
15th bit. If that is so, then the 16th bit is just there as a placeholder
for ONE active level. Does that mean that the remaining 32767 levels in the
16th bit act as mere filler? This certainly sounds like an odd arrangement
to me, though there must have been a reason for doing that, and it may just
be too technical for me ever to hope to comprehend.
